Fathers

Scripture for the day:  Exodus 20:5  “you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.  For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”

Fathers have a special role in the family.  They are to serve as the protector, defender and shield against destructive forces.  Too many fathers are not providing for their families in that way.  In our family we have a good example.  A father put alcohol and drugs before anything else.  If he called upon the name of Jesus, it was in a curse.  As a result, two of his children have been affected by drugs.  The other has gone far from her childhood home, but the scars remain and affect her daily life.  It is a tragedy multiplied many times over in homes today.  Unfortunately, our family is not unique in this experience.  What the father allows to come into the home will have a profound influence on his family.   I am so proud of many of the young men in my church who are providing this godly influence and instruction.  Their homes will be blessed, they will be encouraged, and God will be glorified.  My prayer today is for young fathers everywhere.  For those who are following God, I ask that He strengthen their resolve, show them where they are failing and help them correct their mistakes.  For those outside God’s provision, I pray that they will be convicted of their sin, confess it before almighty God and come into fellowship with God through the shed blood of Christ.  Then and only then will families flourish.

Song for the day:  “The Solid Rock”  http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/0-9/4him/the_solid_rock.html

My prayer today is that fathers will put their hope in the blood of Jesus and not in anything they can do.   Christ’s grace is unchanging.  He is the anchor that holds when storms assail.  He alone can save our families.
